Around 2010, we saw the need for a professional services automation (PSA) solution. Because we are software experts, we designed and developed our own homegrown tool that was used for project management, time entry, invoicing and revenue recognition. But tracking the data was only half the battle. We also built unparallelled reporting for our entire structure of leaders and managers.

In 2023 we decided we had grown large enough that we wanted to move to a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) PSA solution. We selected Oracle NetSuite OpenAir (now SuiteProjects Pro) via a competitive process. In 2024, I took on a lead role in the project to migrate all of our PSA data into the new OpenAir system. I was then asked to recreate all of our reports in OpenAir.

This proved to be much harder than we expected. The out-of-the-box reporting solution was quite limited. I was then challenged to recreate a similar powerful reporting solution similar to what we had with the homegrown PSA. This came to fruition in 2025 and we have learned a lot along the way about the underlying SuiteProjects Pro system, the reporting capabilities, and how to transform it into a high-powered decision making application through effective reporting.
